The Story Behind the Lens: A Journey Through Michigan’s Iconic Lighthouses

As a fine art photographer with a deep connection to the Great Lakes region, I’ve always found myself drawn to the timeless beauty of Michigan’s lighthouses. These historic beacons, standing tall against the elements, have not only guided countless ships to safety but also inspired generations of artists and photographers. Today, I want to take you on a journey through some of Michigan’s most iconic lighthouses, sharing the stories behind the lens and how these structures have shaped my work.

Why Lighthouses?

Lighthouses have long been symbols of hope, resilience, and guidance. They’re structures that stand steadfast through the harshest storms, casting light into the darkest nights. Holland Harbor Lighthouse: "Big Red"

One of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan, the Holland Harbor Lighthouse—affectionately known as "Big Red"—holds a special place in my heart. Located at the channel entrance of Holland State Park, this lighthouse has a unique Dutch architectural style that sets it apart from others.

During a visit on a warm December evening, I captured one of my favorite shots: the sun setting behind Big Red, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. This image, (shown above) which you can find in my fine art prints collection, encapsulates the serene beauty and enduring strength of this iconic structure.

Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse

The Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse is another gem of the Michigan coastline. Standing at the mouth of the Manistee River, this lighthouse has weathered many storms since its construction in 1927. The lighthouse, with its classic cylindrical tower, is a testament to the enduring spirit of the people who rely on it.

Whitefish Point Lighthouse

At the northeastern tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you’ll find the Whitefish Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior, a beacon that has been guiding ships since 1849. It’s located near the infamous "Shipwreck Coast," a 40-mile stretch of treacherous waters where many vessels have met their end.

Photographing Whitefish Point Lighthouse that night was an unforgettable experience. Despite the intermittent rain, the sky cleared just enough to reveal the breathtaking northern lights dancing above the lighthouse. The vast expanse of Lake Superior added to the drama, creating a scene of otherworldly beauty.

The Process Behind the Photos

Every photograph I take of these lighthouses is a labor of love. It’s not just about arriving at the right place at the right time—it’s about understanding the history, the stories, and the emotions these structures evoke.
