Read the Story Behind the Image
As the first light of day broke over the Blue Ridge Mountains, we found ourselves at a quiet overlook, waiting in the crisp December air. I wanted to capture the sunrise in a way that held its essence—pure, round, and radiant, not washed out by too much light. So, I chose to underexpose the shot, hoping to preserve the sun as a perfect disk, a fiery ember against the morning sky.
The effect was more beautiful than I’d imagined. Across the valley, perhaps five or ten miles away, the bare trees stood silhouetted on the ridgeline, their leafless branches reaching up as if drawn to the warmth. It felt as though the trees themselves were waking, absorbing the sun’s gentle glow after the long, cold night. They seemed to stretch toward the light, filled with a quiet resilience, embracing the promise of a new day.
I call this piece "Blue Ridge Ember". It’s a reminder of the strength we find when we seek the light, even in the chill of hard times. Displayed as a focal point in any room, "Blue Ridge Ember" invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the light that sustains them.
