Read the Story Behind the Image
This year's Hunter's Supermoon was predicted to be spectacular, and my plan was simple yet ambitious: I wanted to photograph the moon perfectly aligned between the towers of the Mackinac Bridge but I wasn’t exactly sure if I had positioned myself correctly. I was about ten miles away from the bridge, and as the sky deepened into twilight, I watched, spellbound, as the Hunter's Supermoon began its ascent.
Amazingly, this rare moon rose right over Mackinac Island, casting an orange glow that painted the scene with surreal beauty. The atmosphere must have been just right, because the moon looked massive—larger than I'd ever seen. As it climbed, I could see it begin to shrink slightly, heightening my urgency. If it rose too high, it would be out of my frame and I’d miss the shot I’d imagined.
I waited, heart pounding, my eyes locked on the moon. Finally, it was in position, sitting just between the towers as if they were holding it up. I held my breath and took my shots, capturing a wide panorama from five separate images to convey the scale and splendor of the moment. The editing process later was demanding, my computer struggled, but every attempt and every delay was worth it. I now have a panorama that captures the beauty of that night—a testament to patience, timing, and the beauty of a super moon over Mackinac Bridge.
I call it "Moonlit Mackinac", and with its soft colors and serene glow, it would look stunning as a focal point in any room, bringing a bit of magic and tranquility to any space.
